Legislative Progress: The California State Assembly has unanimously passed a bill allowing residents to install small plug-in solar power systems on balconies or backyards. Having already cleared the Senate, the bill now awaits the signature of Governor Gavin Newsom to become law.
System Functionality: Known as 'balcony solar,' these systems consist of a few panels that plug directly into wall outlets to power household appliances. Some models include battery storage, allowing users to utilize electricity during peak demand hours or power outages.
Regulatory Framework: The legislation removes the need for utility company approval or expensive fees for installation. However, it imposes a 1.2KW capacity limit and strictly prohibits feeding excess electricity back into the main power grid.
Market Outlook: Industry leaders anticipate that California will become the leading market for these devices, prompting manufacturers to ramp up production.
