The Taiwan stock market suffered a massive sell-off today, with foreign and proprietary investors offloading record amounts of shares amid global market volatility.
What Happened
Market Collapse: The Taiwan stock market experienced a severe correction today, plummeting 1,655.96 points to close at 46,969.87 with a massive turnover of NT$1.32 trillion. The downturn was triggered by mounting concerns over U.S. inflation and a widespread sell-off in global semiconductor stocks.
Institutional Activity: Total net selling by the three major institutional investor groups reached NT$370.76 billion. Notably, foreign investors and proprietary traders set new historical records for single-day net selling, offloading NT$302.56 billion and NT$95.82 billion respectively, while domestic investment trusts acted as a buffer by buying NT$28.3 billion.
Foreign Selling Trends: Foreign investors heavily reduced their positions in ETFs, with active ETFs such as Uni-President Upgrade 50 and CTBC Taiwan Income leading the sell-off list. Major industrial stocks including PSMC, Formosa Plastics, Wistron, and Nan Ya Plastics also faced significant selling pressure from foreign institutions.
Foreign Buying Focus: Despite the broad market decline, foreign investors continued to accumulate specific assets, primarily focusing on bond ETFs and financial stocks. Top net buys included Capital Select Non-Investment Grade Bond ETF, Uni-President, Taiwan Cooperative Financial, Mega Financial, and Chunghwa Telecom.
