Foreign Investors Extend Buying Streak in Taiwan Stocks, Favoring Shipping Sector

Transportation · Marine Shipping · economic_daily · 2026-08-24

Despite a weekly decline in the broader market, foreign investors continued their buying streak for the third consecutive week, focusing heavily on shipping stocks.

What Happened

Foreign Investment Trends: Although the Taiwan stock market fell by 586.72 points last week, ending a two-week rally, foreign investors remained net buyers for the third consecutive week. They injected a total of NT$27.445 billion into the market, signaling sustained interest despite short-term volatility.

Sector Allocation: Foreign capital flowed heavily into the shipping industry last week. Yang Ming and Evergreen Marine were among the top three most bought stocks, while Wan Hai Lines also secured a spot in the top ten, highlighting a clear sector preference.

Selling Activity: In contrast to the shipping sector, foreign investors continued to offload shares in other areas. Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing (PSMC) faced the heaviest selling pressure, followed by Taishin Financial and Innolux, which saw significant outflows.

Market Overview: As of August 21, the cumulative net selling by foreign investors for the year stood at NT$1.42 trillion. Foreign holdings currently account for 48.1% of the total market capitalization of listed companies, underscoring their significant role in the local equity market.
