Budget-Friendly Used Vehicles Face Rising Age and Mileage Hurdles
Consumer Durables · Motor Vehicles · cnbc · 2026-09-01
Finding a used car under $20,000 is becoming increasingly difficult, as buyers face older vehicles with higher mileage and elevated maintenance risks.
What Happened
Shrinking Affordable Inventory: Data from Edmunds reveals that the share of used-car sales priced under $20,000 dropped to 32% in the second quarter of 2026, down significantly from 55.2% in 2019. These lower-priced vehicles are moving off dealer lots faster than premium models, reflecting intense consumer demand for budget-friendly transportation options.
Vehicle Quality Trade-offs: Consumers opting for lower-cost vehicles are now purchasing cars that are significantly older and have higher mileage compared to pre-pandemic standards. Experts warn that while the initial purchase price is lower, buyers must account for the increased likelihood of expensive repairs and long-term maintenance requirements.
Financing and Interest Rate Pressures: Used-car buyers face higher interest rates, averaging 11.2% in the second quarter of 2026, compared to 6.4% for new-car loans. Credit scores play a critical role in these costs, with borrowers having scores below 500 facing interest rates that can exceed 21%.
Long-Term Ownership Risks: Financial analysts caution against taking out long-term loans for older vehicles, as the car may require replacement before the debt is fully paid off. This creates a risk of negative equity, where owners are forced to roll remaining loan balances into the financing of their next vehicle purchase.
