South Korea to Issue 230 Billion Won in Retail Treasury Bonds for September

Finance · Major Banks · yonhap_finance · 2026-08-27

The South Korean government will issue 230 billion won in retail treasury bonds this September, now allowing purchases through retirement accounts.

What Happened

Retail Bond Issuance: The Ministry of Economy and Finance announced a plan to issue 230 billion won worth of retail treasury bonds in September. The offering includes various maturities ranging from 3 to 20 years to cater to different investor needs.

Retirement Account Access: Starting this month, investors can purchase 10-year and 20-year retail treasury bonds through their retirement accounts (DC and IRP types). This initiative aims to provide citizens with more stable options for long-term retirement planning.

Tax Benefits and Yields: Investing through retirement accounts allows individuals to benefit from existing tax advantages. With a pre-tax yield of approximately 161.3% for the 20-year bond upon maturity, the product offers a competitive long-term return.

Broader Debt Strategy: In addition to the retail offering, the government plans to issue 16 trillion won in standard treasury bonds via competitive bidding with primary dealers. This represents a 1 trillion won reduction from the previous month, reflecting a calibrated approach to market liquidity.
