Investors Flock to Short-Term US Treasury ETFs Amid Persistent High-Interest Rate Fears

Finance · Investment Managers · yonhap_finance · 2026-09-04

As concerns over prolonged high interest rates grow, South Korean investors are shifting capital into short-term US Treasury ETFs like SGOV for stability.

What Happened

Capital Inflow Trends: Growing concerns over the long-term persistence of high interest rates have driven South Korean investors toward short-term US Treasury ETFs, specifically the SGOV. Between August 28 and September 3, retail investors net-purchased approximately $92.96 million worth of SGOV, making it the most bought asset during that period.

Investment Strategy Shift: SGOV, which invests in US Treasury bonds with maturities of three months or less, serves as a 'parking' vehicle that offers stable monthly dividends while mitigating the risk of price declines associated with rising rates. This shift reflects a broader market preference for stability over volatility as global bond yields continue to climb.

Leveraged Sell-off: Conversely, investors have aggressively offloaded leveraged products, most notably the SOXL, which tracks the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index at 3x leverage. During the same week, retail investors sold over $1.1 billion worth of SOXL, marking it as the most sold asset in the US market.

Domestic Market Context: While interest in US index-tracking ETFs remains strong, total investor deposits in the Korean market dipped back below 100 trillion KRW. Meanwhile, the balance of credit-based margin trading has risen for three consecutive sessions, indicating that 'debt-fueled' investing remains a persistent trend in the local market.
