India's Hindustan Aeronautics and France's Safran Helicopter Engines have signed a final agreement to co-develop the 'Arraballi' engine for future helicopters.
What Happened
Joint Development Agreement: India's state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL) and France's Safran Helicopter Engines have finalized a deal to co-develop the 'Arraballi' engine through their joint venture, SAFHAL Helicopter Engines. The project focuses on creating a new engine with a power output ranging from 3,500 to 4,000 shaft horsepower.
Strategic Significance: The engine is intended for India's upcoming 13-ton multi-role helicopters and various naval aircraft. This partnership marks a significant upgrade in defense cooperation, moving beyond simple licensed production to collaborative design and development of advanced propulsion systems.
Advancing Defense Autonomy: With plans to procure hundreds of new helicopters, India aims to bolster its defense self-reliance through this program. For France, the deal strengthens its footprint in one of the world's largest defense markets while deepening its long-standing industrial ties with India.
Bilateral Relations: The agreement follows multiple high-level discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Emmanuel Macron regarding aerospace and defense cooperation. Both nations view the Arraballi program as a critical milestone for India's aviation engine technology and future fleet operations.
