Taiwanese Brokerages See July Profit Dip Amid Market Slowdown, Yet Remain Up 231% YTD

Finance · Investment Banks/Brokers · economic_daily · 2026-08-26

Despite a sharp monthly decline in July due to market volatility, Taiwan's brokerage sector maintains strong momentum with a 231% year-to-date profit surge.

What Happened

Monthly Profit Decline: Taiwan Stock Exchange data reveals that brokerage firms faced a challenging July, with total net profits falling to NT$10.96 billion, a 58.75% decrease from June. This downturn was driven by market corrections and reduced trading volumes across the board.

Segment Performance: All three core business areas—brokerage, proprietary trading, and underwriting—experienced a decline in July. Brokerage commission income dropped by nearly 23%, while proprietary and underwriting activities shifted into net losses due to market volatility.

Strong Year-to-Date Growth: Despite the monthly setback, the sector's cumulative net profit for the first seven months of the year reached NT$155.05 billion, marking a robust 231.22% increase compared to the same period last year. This growth reflects the strong performance recorded throughout the first half of 2024.

Resilience in Earnings: Having surpassed historical annual profit records within the first five months of the year, the brokerage industry demonstrates significant operational resilience. While July's performance was softer, the sector remains well-positioned for the remainder of the year, contingent on broader market trading activity.
