Petrochemical Stocks Tumble Amid US-Iran Tensions; Formosa Petrochemical Drops Over 9%
Energy Minerals · Oil Refining/Marketing · economic_daily · 2026-08-24
Despite escalating geopolitical risks between the US and Iran, crude oil prices have softened, triggering a sharp sell-off in Formosa Plastics Group stocks.
What Happened
Geopolitical Tensions: The US is preparing to impose its strictest economic sanctions on Iran, prompting threats from Tehran to disrupt oil transit through the Strait of Hormuz. Despite these threats, international oil prices have failed to rally, showing a decline of over 1% instead.
Sector Sell-off: The uncertainty has weighed heavily on Taiwan's petrochemical sector, with the Formosa Plastics Group seeing significant declines. Formosa Petrochemical led the drop, falling over 9% intraday, while other group members saw losses between 4% and 5%.
Refining Margins: Despite the stock price volatility, refining spreads for diesel, gasoline, and jet fuel remain elevated. Tight global inventories and supply disruptions in Russia continue to support margins that are currently outperforming historical averages.
Operational Outlook: Formosa Petrochemical reported a four-year high in monthly revenue for July, reflecting strong underlying performance. The company maintains a positive outlook, expecting refining margins to stay robust throughout the remainder of the year.
